There are hundreds of portable power banks for sale on Amazon and in the pictures they all look the same. Over the years I’ve bought a lot of cheap (and bad) ones, and sp when I find a really good one I like to let people know. This is a really good one that can not only fast charge your phone and other devices, but also your laptop. It’s pretty impressive.

Saying “I need a power bank” is a bit like saying “I need a car.” There are lots of price ranges, options, and frankly quite a few lemons out there. What makes things more confusing is that online, they all pretty much look the same: little black or silver rectangles with a few USB ports. It can be difficult to tell the good ones from the bad ones, which is why I own more than a dozen of these things.

The Grepro GP323 is a solid, all-around good power bank. It has a capacity of 20,000mAh, which is enough to charge an iPhone 4-6 times, so it’s perfect for a weekend getaway. The case is made of aluminum which helps dissipate heat. Heat is the number one killer of these types of batteries so the cooler they stay, the better they’ll perform and the longer they live. Next to the power button is a small but functional display screen that shows the battery’s current level of charge along with how many volts are going out.

Airlines have set the maximum battery size that can be taken on an airplane to 26,000mAh, which means this can be taken on a plane with no problem and you can use it to recharge your devices while you enjoy half a can of soda and some pretzels.

The top of the power bank contains two USB ports, one USB-C and one USB-A. When used at the same time, the USB-C port can output a whopping 100w — that’s huge for a battery this size, and enough power to recharge a tablet or laptop quickly. Simultaneously, the USB-A port can also put out 30w, enough to fast charge a cell phone. The bottom of the power bank contains a third USB-C port, but using it complicates things as it drops all the ports down to 15w. You won’t get fast charging when using all three, but this mode is perfect for charging things like a phone, a camera, and microphones all at the same time.

I ran this power bank through several tests and it passed them all with flying colors. I was able to operate multiple USB-powered drvices directly from the power bank with no problems. One nice thing about this battery is that when connected to a high output charger (65w or more), the GP323 can be fully recharged in about two hours. That’s impressive.

Over the years I’ve purchased a lot of inferior power banks. Over time they tend to swell, depreciate, or in some cases, completely fail within a few months. The Grepro GP323 has such nice build quality and performance that I have no doubts it will last for years to come.
