Whether they’re for work or for play, bodycams are a convenient and useful way to capture footage. For YouTubers, they’re a great way to capture footage hands-free while moving about the world. They’re great for hikers and campers, but can be used in a work setting just as easily.
The camera can record up to 80 minutes per charge while recording 4k video at 30 frames per second. To recharge the camera you simply drop it into a small charging cradle. The back of the camera contains a magnet, so no wires are required. When The charging cradle connects to your PC via USB, which allows users to drop and drag videos directly from the camera to their computer. The charging cradle is small and portable and can be used as a battery pack of sorts, allowing the camera to record up to 6 1/2 hours of video. By default the camera is set to loop recordings, so when the internal 128GB storage eventually fills up, the camera will begin recording over your oldest recordings.
The fact that the camera contains a magnet is cooler than it sounds, as it allows the camera to be affixed to any metal surface. While testing the camera I attached it to the metal door leading to my workshop and the side of my van. I’m not sure I would trust the magnet to hold the camera to my car if I were driving on the interstate, but it felt pretty sturdy.
Included in the box are way more connectors and mounts than I was expecting. Anyone who has ever ordered a collection of mounts for their GoPro will recognize many of the mounts which include a couple of helmet mounts, a handlebar mount, a clip-on mount, a magnetic lanyard, and multiple GoPro-style adapters. The charging cradle has the traditional-sized screw hole for connecting it to any tripod. With the included GoPro-style adapters, you can use all the mounts already in your camera bag with this camera. Or, you can use the clip and attached it to a jacket, shirt, or pants pocket. I even tried putting the clip on the brim of a baseball hat which both worked and raised my geek level by one.
Operating the camera could not be simpler. There are only two buttons on the camera, one for WiFi and one for Power/Recording. To turn the camera on or off, hold down the power button for three seconds. To start/stop recording, press the same button. The other button is used to connect the camera via WiFi. You’ll need to download the app to do that and connect it to the same WiFi network your phone is connected to. The app also allows you to change some settings on the caeram, but to be perfectly transparent I didn’t see the need to use it. Connecting the dock to my computer seemed like a faster and simpler solution for me. If you’ve planning to view, edit, or post the video directly from your phone and want to skip the PC-step, set up the WiFi.
If you’re wondering if this camera is a “GoPro Killer” at 1/5 the price of a GoPro… the answer is no. This 4K camera (and all cameras in this price range) lack image stabilization, the technology that allows people to get smooth video from a GoPro with it duct taped to their skateboard. Moving footage taken with the SixBonds mini body cam will look like bodycam footage. You can get better quality footage by mounting the camera in a stationary position like on a tripod and you’ll have to be a bit more discerning when it comes to lighting situations, but the footage is still pretty good for the price.
