The first time I heard about these power packs that claim to be able to jump start a car, I thought it was too good to be true. Turns out, I was wrong. Not only to these things work but I think everybody who owns a verhicle should have one.

If you’re thinking to yourself “why is this thing better than jumper cables?” you haven’t recently had to deal with a dead car abttery. The fact of the matter is, jumper cables are a pain in the neck to deal with. First and foremost, you have to have them with you in your car, which most people don’t. Using them requires another vehicle, which either means waiting for someone you know to arrive or awkwardly asking strangers if they’ll “give you a jump.” And even if you have jumper cables and even if someone arrives to help you, you still may end up pushing a dead car out of a parking spot so that you can physically connect the cables to both cars.

This battery from Gooloo eliminates literally all of those issues. It’s a battery that charges through USB-C and can fit underneath your seat or in your glove compartment. To jump start your car, all you’ll need to do is connect the jumper cables to the battery with its proprietary plug (in only goes one way), wait for the light to turn green, and then start your car. Literally, that’s it. No mess, no fuss. The device can detect if you’ve connected the battery cables backwards and will inform you with a red light (and won’t try to zap your battery). There’s a built-in flashlight which on a lot of gadgets I find a little hokey, but if you’ve ever tried hooking up jumper cables in the dark you know that this can come inhandy.

The device has two USB-A ports (one regular and one QC) along with a bidirectional USB-C port that can all be used to charge other devices, but I try not to use it except in emergencies. I’ve found that when fully charged the battery pack can last several months (upwards of six) without draining. That being said, I would hate to discover that the battery was dead and unable to jump my car because I’d been recharging my phone with it every day.

The Gooloo battery comes in a case that I didn’t immediately throw away like so many others, so that’s saying something. It has a flap that stays shut thanks to a strip of Velcro that keeps everything inside. There’s a small divider inside which makes placing the jumper cables and battery back inside with ease. I also keep a spare USB-A to USB=C cable (one’s included) in the bag as well for charging and emergencies.

These batteries are available in multiple sizes. Each one will tell you the type of car or maximum engine size it can start. If you’re only planning to own one of these things my advice is to buy a relatively large one. There’s no hard in getting one too big, but if you end up with one that’s too small you might not be able to jump someone else’s vehicle (or your next one).

I personally find asking others to help me jump my car to be incredibly awkward as well as dangerous. 100% true, a couple of years ago we left our car at the airport while on vacation and returned to discover one of the kids had left the rear dome light on which drained our battery. My wife had AAA which is who we called and it took them 2 HOURS to arrive to jump our car. I bought my first Gooloo battery shortly after that and it works so well that I bought a second one to put in my wife’s car.

Getting stranded at night can be dangerous. This gadget will have you back on the road in no time without needing help from anyone else. Personally I’ll never own or drive another car that doesn’t have one of these on board.
