As someone who never seems to have enough monitor space, I began looking into buying a mega-large monitor. This 43″ 4K monitor from Dell has super positive reviews, but the sticker price made me wonder if a 43″ 4K television would be just as good? And the short answer is, no. There’s a reason they make both monitors and televisions.

JUST THE FACTS
Dell’s 43″ 4K monitor, with its UHC 2160p display, might be the most beautiful computer display I’ve ever used. Diagonally the screen measures 43″, with a footprint of roughly 25″W and 28″H. The monitor features a built-in KVM system, USB-C hub, and speakers. Speakers!
FULL REVIEW
I’ve been using computers for a long, long time. My first computer monitor was a 13″ CRT, and things only got better from there. Over the years I’ve graduated to flatscreen monitors, then two monitors, then three — and even then I find myself running out of screen real estate and desk space. My three 27″ monitors take up more than five feet of desk space.
I’ve wanted a larger monitor for some time now but it never made sense to me that a monitor like this one with a price tag of $999 would cost four times as much as a 43″ 4K television. We all know all those screens come from one Chinese factory somewhere, right? Shouldn’t a television work just as well?
The short version is, no. I know because I tried it. I purchased a mid-range 43″ 4K television from a big box store and connected it to my PC via HDMI. I looked online and drilled down through all he settings making sure the television was optimized to be used as a monitor. And while it was big, it just wasn’t pleasant to look at. Text was especially harsh and a little too crisp. Here’s how much I disliked it — after a week of use, I put the television in our guest room and began hooking my monitors back up.
It took me another month to build up the courage but eventually I pulled the trigger on this Dell. I was afraid that text on any screen that large would look bad, but I was wrong. I don’t know if it’s due to the size of the pixels or the spacing, but there’s something about monitors that makes them pleasant to look at from just a foot or two away, while television screens are not.
According to the manual this monitor can act like a KVM and support multiple machins at a time, something I must admit I have not tried. For me, the selling point was being able to drag four different windows into the four quadrants and have four 1080p “screens” all on one monitor, with the ability to move and resize things as needed. I didn’t realize how sore my neck was getting from moving my head back and forth all day long until getting this thing.
Is it for everybody? No. In fact, you probably know if it’s for you or not. I’m not here to try and convince you to buy a 43″ monitor. What I am here to say is that if you are thinking about taking the plunge, you should do it. You don’t regret it.
WHAT I LIKED
✅ Large, beautiful 4K UHD 2160p Display
✅ Built in speakers and USB ports
WHAT COULD BE BETTER
❌ It’s 45″ wide, 28″ tall, and weighs 40lbs. You’ll need a big desk
❌ It ain’t cheap
SUMMARY AND LINKS
Like I said, I’m not here to try and talk you into buying a giant monitor. Only you know if you need one this big or not. What I can say is that is that it is infinitely nicer to look at over a flat screen television. Save the televisions for you rmovir watching and buy a monitor for your computer work. You will not regret it.
