Chevy Cruze Custom Grille | Update Your Car’s Look

From custom paint jobs and rims to steering wheel covers and fuzzy dice (does anyone remember those?), people love customizing their cars. When a friend of mine expressed interest in updating the look of his 2017 Chevy Cruze, we did some research and found this grille for sale on Amazon. The real question was… did we bite off more than we could chew?

FULL REVIEW

When my friend asked if I could help replace the stock grille on his 2017 Chevy Cruze, I said sure. I’m not super mechanical but I have all the basic tools and figured, how hard can it be? Several hours later with his bumper completely disconnected with the two of us desperately prying to remove the stock grille, we were beginning to rethink our decision.

To replace the original grille, the Chevy Cruze bumper needs to be completely removed. While it’s not terribly difficult, there’s a lot to it. Never having done it before, we referred to multiple YouTube videos for pointers. The upper grille connects to the car with several screws located underneath the hood. Underneath the car you’ll find a long row of bolts connecting the bumper to the skid plate. The most difficult bolts to access are inside the wheel well underneath the built-in wheel covers, neither of which were fun to remove. To fully access everything underneath the wheel wells we had to jack up the car.

A couple of hours into the project, my friend’s car looked like this:

Removing the bumper was just the beginning. Removing the stock grilles from the bumper is not for the weak. The grilles are (mostly) helf in place by tabs designed to go on and not come out. Using a combination of screwdrivers, pliers, and knuckle blood, we were able to remove the grilles. Fortunately, inserting the new ones was much easier, the only real challenge being making sure all the tabs are lined up before you start pressing.

With the new grilles inserted all that was left was to reattach the bumper. Once we knew where all the bolts, screws, and clips were, the reverse process went more quickly.

All in all it took us approximately four hours if you include the time we watched YouTube and scratched our heads. If I were to do another one I think I could do it in a couple of hours. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s certainly doable even for a novice with enough patience.

The grilles themselves were essentially the same quality as the originals. The plastic felt solid and snapped into the same slots as the original. For a more custom look they could be painted without much trouble. The grilles had a subtle upgraded look to the Cruze. They work both for those wanting to replace a broken grille and people wanting to freshen up the look of their car.
